Talks started around the beginning of the school year, “and ultimately there was a lot of good communication involved, and a lot of collaboration.” Budgetary shortfalls are among the root cause of many of the district’s issues, he said, and he said he’s proud that while the budget supports “our great teachers,” it also does so in a fiscally responsible way.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Though he admitted it’s not ideal and was forced by budget constraints, there are bright sides, Aubin and school committee chairman Evan Gendreau said. Gendreau said that faced with the district’s financial realities, leaving the old school made sense, instead of finding other places to cut $90,000 from the budget. “Our goal going into cuts is always to minimize the impact on student learning,” Gendreau said, noting that having administrators close to students is a benefit — “we’re running pretty thin with administrators because we can’t afford it.”</image:caption>

      <image:title>Issues - Responsible Budgeting</image:title>
<image:caption>Taxpayers deserve a transparent and accountable budget process. As Chair of the Budget Subcommittee, Evan advocates for our schools and works collaboratively with the Select Board and Finance Committee to ensure accountable spending of taxpayer dollars that serves the needs of our district. In his first term, Evan has successfully worked to reduce the school department’s reliance on free cash without cutting the overall budget or reducing services.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Issues - Helping Every Student Succeed</image:title>
<image:caption>Offering an individualized approach to education remains a priority for Westport Community Schools. Evan is supporting the district’s efforts to meet students’ needs by expanding our technical education programming to provide career-connected coursework and credentialing to students in a wide range of areas. To further support this effort, the district recently received a Career Innovation Pathways designation by the state Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Issues - Accountable Fiscal Oversight</image:title>
<image:caption>The Westport Community Schools has a budget of over $23 million. One of Evan’s top priorities is to ensure that taxpayer dollars are spent responsibly and that the budget process is transparent. Evan shares regular updates on the budget process, is responsive to questions from taxpayers, and has led the district’s presentations to the Select Board and Finance Committee. Evan also reviews the Town’s audit reports as a member of the Audit Committee.</image:caption>
